Great Work, Quiet Phone? The NZ Small Business Growth Guide.

Your work is a ten. Your Google listing is a four. Guess which one your next customer sees first?

This one's for business owners who do great work and want the phone to ring a lot more. Short, practical and backed by current research. No fluff, no fairy dust, and only a couple of dad jokes.

Before you scroll, three honest questions:
  1. Do you know how many enquiries you got last month?
  2. If a stranger Googled your business right now, would they book you?
  3. Do you reply to every enquiry on the same day?
One "no" is enough. Grab a coffee and keep reading. It takes about 7 minutes.

Part 1 · The situation

NZ small business, by the numbers

38%of NZ small businesses grew in 2025. Last of 11 Asia Pacific markets, two years running.
47%of NZ businesses still have no website. In 2026. Yes, really.
17%of SMEs have less than one month of cash in reserve
14%of SMEs rate their business health "very good", down from 22%

Sources: CPA Australia (April 2026), InternetNZ (2025), Prospa SME Sentiment Tracker (March 2026).

Who grew in 2025? Share of small businesses reporting growth

NZ owners under 4071%
Asia Pacific average62%
All NZ small businesses38%
NZ owners over 6025%

Source: CPA Australia Small Business Survey, more than 4,100 businesses across 11 markets.

It isn't about age. It's about adapting.

CPA Australia puts that gap down to digital skills and an appetite for change, not birthdays. And here's the cheeky bit: only 5% of NZ small businesses plan to launch anything new in 2026, compared with 29% across the region. The bar to stand out is sitting on the floor. Step over it.

The pressure you're probably feeling

What's happeningThe numbersWhat it means for you
Energy and fuel costs73% of businesses are worried about them. Only economic uncertainty worries them more.Less left over from every job
Prices going up31% have already raised prices because of energy costsYour customers see price rises everywhere, so your value has to be obvious
Businesses closingApplications to wind up companies hit a 10 year high in 2026Customers are pickier about who gets their money

Sources: ASB Business Survey, 406 business leaders, August and September 2026. ODT, September 2026.

The good news: people are still buying. They just check you out first.

What NZ customers do before they spend

The gapCustomers want proof before they buy. Most businesses aren't showing any. The one that looks most trustworthy online usually gets the call. Not always the best one. The one that looks it.

Part 2 · Business growth

Fix the foundations first

More marketing won't fix a leaky business. Pour more customers into a bucket with holes and all you get is wet shoes. Five foundations, in this order:

01Know your four numbers

Once a month. Ten minutes. A notebook works. So does the back of a receipt, but please don't.

NumberWhat it meansHow to work it out
EnquiriesPeople who asked about your service by phone, message, form or walking in. Also called leads.Count them for the month
ConversionHow many enquiries turned into a paid bookingBookings ÷ enquiries × 100
Average saleWhat a typical job brings inTotal sales ÷ number of jobs
Repeat customersPeople who came back or sent a mateCount returns and referrals
Plain EnglishConversion is the share of interested people who actually pay you. 20 enquiries and 10 bookings means 50% conversion. Half the people who put their hand up became customers.

Run your own numbers

Change the figures and watch what a small lift in conversion is worth.

Monthly sales today$4,000
With 10 points more conversion$4,800
Extra per year$9,600

Same enquiries. More money. The cheapest growth usually isn't chasing new people. It's converting more of the people who already found you.

02Speak fluent money

Six words that tell you whether a busy business is actually a healthy one:

WordWhat it meansWhy you should care
RevenueAll the money coming in from sales, before costsLooks impressive. Isn't what you keep.
ProfitWhat's left after every cost is paidThe bit that actually pays you
Cash flowWhen money comes in versus when it goes outYou can be profitable on paper and still run out of cash
DepositA part payment before the job startsCovers your costs and kills no shows
InvoiceThe bill asking your customer to paySend it late, get paid late
Payment termsHow long your customer has to payNZ small businesses waited around 25 days to get paid in 2025
  • Take a deposit before you lock in the booking.
  • Invoice the day the job is done.
  • Set 7 day payment terms, not 30.
  • Check unpaid invoices every Friday. Then reward yourself with a pie.

03Price with confidence

If your costs went up and your prices didn't, congratulations: you gave yourself a pay cut. Nearly a third of NZ businesses have already adjusted their prices this year. Explain the value, set the price, back yourself.

04Get the business out of your head

Write down every task you repeat each week: quoting, booking, reminders, asking for reviews. Turn each one into a template. Automate what you can. Save one hour a week and you get a full working week back every year.

05Test one thing at a time

One change. Thirty days. Check your four numbers. Keep what works, bin what doesn't. Boring? Absolutely. Effective? Annoyingly so.

How we work with you

STEP 1DiagnoseWe look at your business the way a customer does and find what's costing you bookings
STEP 2PlanYour goal, plus the three changes that matter most over the next 30 to 90 days
STEP 3ShowPhotos, video and words that make your value obvious
STEP 4MeasureTrack the numbers, keep what works, drop what doesn't

Part 3 · Marketing

Turn attention into bookings

Every customer walks the same four steps in their head. Break one and the sale stops dead.

StepWhat they're thinkingWhat loses themWhat wins them
1. Notice"Who does this?"You don't show upGoogle profile, website, regular posts
2. Trust"Are they any good?"Three reviews and dim photosReviews, before and after shots, real work
3. Decide"Is it worth it?"No price, fuzzy promisesA clear result, a "from" price, proof
4. Book"How do I book?"Slow replies, hard to reachOne button and a reply the same day
Your turnWhich step is the weakest in your business right now? Be honest. We won't tell.

01Understand how people decide

Nobody actually wants "a car detail". They want their car looking brand new before they sell it. Use their words. They're sitting right there in your reviews and messages.

How people behaveHow to use it
We trust what other people trustPut reviews and real results where buyers will see them
We hate losing more than we like winning"Stop losing jobs to cheaper competitors" beats "grow your business" every time
We say a small yes before a big yesOffer a free check before the big package
We decide with feelings, then justify with factsLead with the result. Details second.
Plain EnglishSocial proof is our habit of copying what others do when we're unsure. A business with 80 good reviews feels safer than one with 3, before we've even picked up the phone.

02Find your voice

Your brand voice is how your business sounds on your website, in your posts and on the phone. Think of it as you on your best day, after a good coffee.

BusinessVoiceSounds like
DetailerProud, precise"Fourteen hours. Three stages of polish. Zero swirl marks."
MechanicHonest, straight"We'll tell you what needs fixing, and what can wait."
Boat dealerRelaxed, aspirational"Your weekends, sorted."

03Use words that sell

Most businesses describe what they do. The ones that get booked describe what the customer gets.

The formula: who you help + their problem + the result + proof + the next step.

Instead of thisWrite this
"We offer professional ceramic coating services.""Make your car look showroom new and keep it that way for years. See our before and afters, then book a free paint check."
"Full range of mechanical services.""WOF and repairs with a clear quote before we start. Most cars are back on the road the same day."
Plain EnglishA call to action (CTA) is the one thing you ask people to do next, like "Book a free check" or "Call now". Every page and post needs one. Just one. Two is a menu.

04Show your expertise, and your gift

Everyone who's good at their job has a gift: the detail they never skip, the thing they know that customers don't. Most people hide it. Don't.

  • Show the process. A 20 second clip of the work behind the result says "we care" louder than any caption.
  • Teach something. "Three things that wreck your paint in summer." People remember who taught them.
  • Let results talk. Before and afters and reviews keep selling while you sleep.

05Use visuals that sell

Online, your photos are your work. Great work plus rushed photos reads as rushed work. Harsh, but true.

DoDon't
Show your real work, place and peoplePass off stock photos as your own
Use the same angle and light for before and aftersCompare a dark "before" with a sunny "after"
Open videos on the best moment, the hookStart with a slow intro or a spinning logo
Add subtitles, because most people watch on muteRely on sound to tell the story
[ PHOTO: before and after pair from your portfolio, landscape, at least 1600px wide ]

06Get known where people look

PriorityWhereWhat to do
1Google Business Profile, your free listing on Google Search and MapsReal photos, services, hours and regular updates
2ReviewsAsk every happy customer, every time, with a direct link
3WebsiteWhat you do, "from" prices, proof, FAQs and one booking button
4Instagram and FacebookYour shop window. Use it, just don't rely on it alone.
5AI searchClear website copy, FAQs and reviews help tools like ChatGPT recommend you

07Make booking effortless

This is where most sales quietly die. A few small changes in how you talk make a massive difference:

Instead of…Try…
"Our prices start at $800.""What's the car for? Everyday driver or something special?"
Listing five options"For what you're after, I'd recommend this one."
"Let me know if you're interested.""Want to pop in Thursday for a free 10 minute check?"
Going quiet after a quote"Just checking the quote came through. Any questions?"
Hoping for a review"Would you mind leaving a quick review? Here's the link."

Reply the same day. The first business to reply often wins the job. The second one gets a polite "all sorted, thanks".

Case in point: great detailer, quiet phone

Illustrative example, not a real client.

What a customer seesThe fix
Phone photos in a dim garageOne shoot: before and afters from the same angle, plus a 20 second reveal video
Six Google reviewsAsk the last 20 customers, with a direct link
No prices anywhereA simple page with a "from" price
Replies take two daysReplies the same day, plus a free paint check offer

No magic. Just great work, made visible and easy to buy.
